So it's goodbye from me :( I have come to the end of my 9 years in the European School. It has been a fantastic time and I can honestly say you are the best students in the world :) I guess this is the end of 'storeystudents' although I may use it again in my next school, wherever that may be!
I know I am going back to Liverpool but not sure which school yet. Sorry to any of you who I didn't say goodbye to properly but we were debating right up to the last minute whether I would stay or not but decided to go back to England.
All the best of luck in your bright and exciting futures !! :)
Mr. Storey
English Humour
I have been watching with some of my classes some classic British comedy. Try watching some of these and see if you like them!
1. Monty Python. This sketch is about a man who goes to an argument clinic to get an argument. He is told by the secretary to go to a room but finds he has the wrong one. He then finds the room but gets more of a contradiction than an argument....

2. The Two Ronnies. In this sketch a man who has a very strong regional accent goes into a hardware shop and asks for various things. There are some funny misunderstandings...
Some are about linking words and sound alikes: four candles and fork handles
Some are about homonyms: plug (for bathroom sink) and plug (electrical device)
and some about homophones: hoes (for gardening), hose (for water) and o's (the letters)

Happy New Year to all and best wishes for success and happiness in 2017
It is exam time for many of you, so here are some great revision tips, you should be revising your material now!!
- Study in a quiet place away from the TV and computers etc that is both light and comfortable.
- Make a 'revision timetable' and always let your family know when you are revising.
- Create summary notes and anything simple that helps your memory – as short notes, drawings and sayings are much easier to remember. Use highlighting colours to help things stand out from the page.
- Get help. Ask friends and family to test you.
- Record yourself reading notes and occasionally listen to them instead of reading.
- Take a 5 or 10 minute break every hour and do some stretching exercises, go for a short walk or make yourself a drink.
- Allow yourself some fun-time each day to relax...and make sure you get a good 8 hours of sleep each night.
- Eat well. Good brain foods? Wholegrain foods (cereals, wheat bran, wheatgerm and whole wheat pasta). Blueberries. Blackcurrants. Broccoli. Tomatoes. Oily fish. Nuts. and a little bit of chocolate, but dark chocolate is healthiest!
- Don't panic if you feel a bit nervy. A certain amount of nervousness actually helps you perform to the best of your ability, producing a rush of adrenaline that helps you to feel alert and focused. Adapted from topmarks.co.uk
Normal service is resumed - I am back to full health :)

S4 Geog students please note that the B test will be this Friday, 28th October
Sorry I have been under the weather with this cold for the past few days and unable to get to school. Today I will be absent again but normal service will be resumed on Monday, hopefully! Unfortunately I have had to miss quite a few classes, and especially my S4 Geog class, who should have had a B test today - we will have to postpone until next week, the 28th October.
Painting and Art Exhibition - 14, 15, 16 October - Please come!
There is a Belgian painter called Rik Wouters who used to live in Watermael Boisfort, from the impressionist school, who died in 1916. To commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of his life, the artists who live in this commune are making an exhibition of all their work and I am going to exhibit some of my paintings as part of it. There is an opening ceremony on Friday, but also during the whole weekend you are welcome to enter the artists' houses and view paintings, sculpture and music performances. Please come and enjoy!

Reading in English
It is very important to read in English, to expand your vocabulary, get a feel for sentence structure and improve your grammar. By making time to regularly read from various sources like novels, news articles and magazines, it can greatly improve your general English. Here is a list of suggested novels for various levels that you may be interested in seeing what takes your fancy and doing some extra reading in English.

Your generous participation in our donation campaign for the earthquake victims in Nepal enabled us to transfer 610,81 € in the name of EEB III to Médecins Sans Frontières. A big thank you to all of you and especially to the pupils of our classes who have organized the sales.
Christmas Cards for Charity
Me and my colleagues are selling Christmas cards (saying Happy Christmas and New Year in all the European Lanugages) to make some money for 'Médecins Sans Frontières' and in particular the refugees in Nepal. Please buy Christmas cards from me to help out the charity, we are selling at 1 euro each, and a large part of that money goes to charity.
I am also growing a beard for this, which we call 'Growember'!
Please give generously :)

Welcome Back to School !!
I hope you too are all feeling enthusiastic and fresh for the challenges and study this year, like I am !!
My holiday was spent in Indonesia, where we spent seven weeks in total. It is a completely different world, we had a fantastic time and some very interesting experiences. We spent the time visiting my wife's family and also spending time travelling and seeing some of the country. It is a hot, tropical place where the temperature is always around 30 degrees, day and night, and very humid. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming and I really enjoyed practicing my Indonesian, which I speak fairly fluently; it's an interesting language and VERY different to European languages. Examples: 'Apa Khabar?' - How's things? 'Saya orang Inggris !' - I am English ! The tenses are much easier (they only have 3 tenses compared to the 16 or so in English) but the prefixes and suffixes are a bit confusing. My most interesting experience was climbing a volcano and going into the crater to have a look around (see picture).

Goodbye all and have a great summer ! good luck to those who are leaving to University, work hard and don't hesitate to come back and see me sometime ! See you all in September :)
We had a great time on the year 3 trip to Ireland. We were staying on a farm in County Meath, Ireland, close to the capital Dublin. It was lovely to stay in a place which had horses, cows (and new calves) and sheep, in the heart of the beautiful Irish countryside. The activities we did were horseriding and golf, so it was a new experience for me to sit on a horse (not as scary as I thought) and to hit the air and dislodge big turfs of grass for an hour or so before learning how to hit a golf ball properly. Visiting Dublin was a fantastic experience, seeing the famous Trinity College and the shops and buskers of Grafton Street. Other things we did were cuddle lambs, play and dance Irish music, play hurling, make Irish bread, and the highlight of the last day, jumping into a muddy Irish bog ! I hope all the year 3s and year 6s had as good a time as we had on their school trips !

Thanks to Alejandro, from my S1 class, for this one, THE POWER OF PUNCTUATION:
An English professor walked up to the chalkboard and carefully wrote out the following sentence, informing the students it was their responsibility to punctuate it correctly.
“A woman without her man is nothing”
All of the males in the class wrote:
“A woman, without her man, is nothing”
All of the females in the class wrote:
“A woman: without her, man is nothing”

Have a nice week's holiday, don't forget to keep up with your practicing English !
Enjoy the 'Carnival' atmosphere, there are some nice carnivals you can go to - the one at Binche I would recommend, the 'Gilles' dress like you can see in the picture and throw oranges all over the place, it is quite an experience !

I have been meeting with parents this week and will see more next week, here are the presentations I refer to sometimes in my conversations with course and class information, reading lists, activities, etc.
British English and American English
We have been talking in some of my classes about the differences between British and American English. It is significant in vocabulary, but especially in spelling, and in the European schools most of the teachers and examiners you meet with will be British. So I would suggest (and I am biased!) that you adopt the British forms.

Error Correction
Having been at the European School for five years now, I have taught a lot of English classes and corrected a lot of students' writing ! I have been collecting a file of the most common mistakes, errors and confusions which European students make in their writing. Things like - it's not 'the house of my uncle' but 'my uncle's house'; it's not 'I didn't went' but 'I didn't go'; and it's not 'I go usually to bed early' but 'I usually go to bed early'.
I have put many of these common mistakes and their corrections into a word document. If you want to improve the accuracy of your English at the beginning of this year - read it carefully !! :)

Welcome back to school, a new academic year 2014 - 2015. Blow away those cobwebs and get ready to study! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are feeling refreshed and ready to start the new year. I went to England, Ireland and France during the long break, and also spent time enjoying Belgium. On the right is a picture of the lovely Connemara national park in Ireland, where I spent some time, and also the Buorgogne, where we went camping in France. Enjoy being back at school!

Engrish spoken here
Travelling to many parts of the world has made me realise that there is such a demand around the planet for the English Language, especially in Asia where I have spent a lot of time. However, the people don't always have access to native speaker teachers, and many English schools are set up without experts.
Local people make notices and signs without checking, and this can lead to quite hilarious mistakes. Perhaps you will find some of them funny: from 'this freezer is out of control' (should of course be 'out of order') to 'alive vest under your seat' (should be 'life vest under your seat'), they are very interesting mistakes.
