Exam:
Reading Comprehension – a random text with questions like multiple choice, fill the gaps, etc. (like a reading comprehension in Headway)
Make sure you read the text carefully and check answers.
A literature essay – about a theme or a character in Of Mice and Men.
Essay writing points:
Analyze the character of Lennie in the novel Of Mice and Men.
Here is an example essay we discussed in class:
QUESTION: Compare and Contrast the characters of Mickey and Eddie
Willy Russel’s play, Blood Brothers, is firstly a great story tale in musical form, but similarly it is a modern drama that reflects the differences between the social classes in Liverpool. The two main characters which I will focus on in this essay are Mickey and Eddie, twins who are separated at birth.
Mickey and Eddie have different characters because of many reasons; firstly I will talk about their wealth and social background. Mickey was brought up as one of many brothers and sisters, who didn’t have much money because his mother was just a cleaning lady. The Johnstone family could not afford many luxuries: they didn’t have anything that was not strictly necessary. Furthermore, there was no father to provide for them. The Lyons, however, had a lot of money. Mr. Lyons had a full time job which paid well and Eddie could get whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
Another factor which affected their characters was education. Eddie goes to school; he’s a good student with great marks. Mickey is the opposite of Eddie; Mickey hates school, never goes and has bad marks. He loves saying rude words because he doesn’t have a good education and has a very bad vocabulary. A funny part of the musical is when Eddie says ‘What’s the F word? ‘and Mickey replies ’What’s a dictionary?’ Even though Mickey doesn’t have a good education, he is nevertheless street wise and leads Eddie and Linda into naughty games.
A third factor which contrasts their characters is their reactions to women. They change from wishing they were like each other to being jealous of each other because of their love of the same woman. Despite the fact that Mickey is shyer with girls, he eventually gets the girl with Eddie’s help. In the end though, he loses her.
Finally, these contrasts become very tragic ant the end of the play. It is their contrasting education and ability to get a job which means that Eddie gets work and steals Linda, and Mickey loses his job. His character has changed from a happy go lucky kid into a depressed drug addict. This funny and entertaining musical ends in tragedy.

A literature essay – about a theme or a character in Of Mice and Men.
Essay writing points:
- Good paragraphs and structure with topic sentences (the first sentence in the paragraph) related to the question.
- Answer the question well, don’t just tell the story.
- Accurate language and grammar, and vocabulary.
- Integrate short relevant quotes in your sentences. (this means you have to learn some of the quotes). For example: When George says ‘’I guess maybe way back in my head I did’, it shows that even though he wanted the dream to succeed, he had suspicions that it would never be possible.
- Show that you understand the complexity of the novel.
